Indian boxing legend Mary Kom, married to Karung Onkholer (Onler) since 2005, is reportedly going through a challenging period in her personal life. According to recent reports, Mary and Onler are on the brink of divorce, having been living separately for some time. The tension between the couple is said to have begun after Onler’s loss in the 2022 Manipur Assembly Elections, a campaign that saw them spend an estimated Rs 2-3 crores. The electoral defeat has reportedly left them both deeply affected.
According to a Hindustan Times report, Mary has relocated to their home in Faridabad with their four children, while Onler has been staying in Delhi. A source close to the couple shared, “Mary moved to Faridabad with their children, while Onler has been living in Delhi with some family members. The differences between them intensified after the elections. Mary, in particular, was unhappy with the financial losses incurred during the campaign and the defeat.”
The same report revealed that Onler had been hesitant to enter the political arena but ultimately agreed to contest the elections at Mary’s urging. A source close to the couple stated, “It was Mary’s idea for him to run. He didn’t want to, and had warned her that the political situation in Manipur was unstable at the time.”
Following the defeat, the marital disagreements between Mary and Onler reportedly became more severe. As a result, Mary chose to move out with their children to their Faridabad residence.
While neither Mary nor Onler have publicly commented on the situation, anonymous sources have suggested that their separation could be permanent, with one boxer claiming that Mary is now in a relationship with another boxer’s husband. The boxer speculated that Mary’s recent Instagram posts, which feature this man as a “business associate,” have fueled rumors of an affair.
The emotional toll on Onler since the separation has also been highlighted. “He’s heartbroken,” a source shared. “Onler has always been a devoted father who sacrificed his football career to support Mary’s boxing career and raise their children. Now that Mary has moved out, he is unable to see his kids, and it’s taking a toll on him emotionally. Everyone knows he put his career on hold to help her build hers.”
