In a firm move underscoring the Delhi government’s ‘zero tolerance’ stance on arbitrary school fee hikes, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has taken decisive action against a private school in the national capital accused of raising fees without proper justification.
The action comes in response to multiple complaints from parents who alleged that the school had significantly increased tuition fees for the upcoming academic session, despite no apparent improvement in infrastructure, teacher salaries, or academic offerings. The fee hike, according to parents, was sudden and imposed without consultation or explanation.
Taking serious note of the issue, CM Kejriwal ordered the Directorate of Education (DoE) to initiate a detailed inquiry into the matter. In a statement, the Chief Minister emphasized that private schools cannot be allowed to exploit parents under any circumstances.
“We have a zero tolerance policy towards the commercialization of education. Fee Hike No school will be allowed to arbitrarily raise fees. Education is a right, not a business,” Kejriwal said.
Following the inquiry, the government directed the school to roll back the fee hike immediately. Further, the school has been asked to refund any excess amount collected from parents along with interest. If the institution fails to comply, it may face strict penalties, including the possible withdrawal of its recognition.
This move is part of a broader effort by the Delhi government to regulate private schools and ensure transparency in fee structures. The Education Department has also launched a portal where parents can report any irregularities related to school fees or other concerns.
Parents and education activists have welcomed the government’s swift response. “This is a much-needed intervention. Many schools have been increasing fees year after year without proper justification. We hope this sets an example,” said Neha Batra, a parent of two children studying in a private school in West Delhi.
As the government continues to tighten oversight on educational institutions, the message is clear — profiteering in the name of education will not be tolerated.
