New Delhi, April 19: India has strongly condemned the recent killing of a prominent Hindu leader in Bangladesh, urging Dhaka to “live up to its responsibility” to protect minority communities and ensure justice is delivered swiftly.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday expressed deep concern over the incident, calling it a “disturbing reminder” of the growing threats faced by religious minorities in Bangladesh. “We expect the Government of Bangladesh to take decisive action, investigate this heinous act thoroughly, and bring the perpetrators to justice,” an MEA spokesperson said.
The victim, a well-known Hindu community figure, was reportedly targeted in a brutal attack earlier this week, sparking outrage among human rights groups and the Hindu diaspora. While details of the attack are still emerging, early reports suggest it may have been motivated by religious intolerance.
India emphasized that safeguarding minority rights is a cornerstone of democratic societies and urged Bangladesh to uphold the spirit of secularism enshrined in its Constitution. “We call on our neighbor to live up to its responsibility and ensure that such incidents do not recur,” the spokesperson added.
The killing has prompted widespread condemnation from civil society organizations in both countries, with many demanding stronger protections for minorities in Bangladesh. Indian officials have also hinted at raising the matter through diplomatic channels to ensure a coordinated response.
