India Condemns Killing of Hindu Leader in Bangladesh, Urges Protection of Minority Rights

India has strongly condemned the abduction and killing of Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a prominent Hindu community leader, in Bangladesh’s Dinajpur district. In a statement issued on Saturday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed deep concern over what it described as a continued pattern of violence against minority communities.

“We have noted with distress the abduction and brutal killing of Shri Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a Hindu minority leader in Bangladesh. This killing follows a pattern of systematic persecution of Hindu minorities under the interim government, even as the perpetrators of previous such events roam with impunity,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated on X (formerly Twitter).

The MEA further called on the Bangladeshi interim government to fulfil its obligations in ensuring the safety and rights of all minority communities. “We condemn this incident and once again remind the interim government to live up to its responsibility of protecting all minorities, including Hindus, without inventing excuses or making distinctions,” Jaiswal added.

Details of the Incident

According to local media reports cited by PTI, Bhabesh Chandra Roy, 58, was abducted from his residence in Dinajpur on Thursday afternoon. Reports indicate that Roy received a phone call around 4:30 p.m., allegedly from the perpetrators. Roughly 30 minutes later, four unidentified men arrived on two motorcycles and forcibly took him away.

Roy was reportedly transported to Narabari village, where he was severely beaten. He was later returned to his home in an unconscious state. Despite efforts by family members to get him medical attention, he was declared dead upon arrival at a local hospital.

Roy served as the vice-president of the Biral unit of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad and was a respected figure within the local Hindu community.

India Rebukes Dhaka’s Remarks on West Bengal

India also rejected recent remarks made by Bangladeshi officials concerning incidents in West Bengal, urging Dhaka to focus on safeguarding the rights of its own minorities. New Delhi cautioned against “virtue signalling” and emphasized the importance of responsible governance in ensuring the protection of all communities.

The killing of Bhabesh Chandra Roy has drawn widespread attention and further intensified concerns over the safety of minority populations in Bangladesh amid increasing reports of targeted violence.
