Mumbai Tragedy: Elderly Cancer Patient Abandoned in Aarey Colony
In a deeply disturbing incident from Mumbai’s Aarey Colony, a 60-year-old woman battling cancer was discovered lying amidst a pile of garbage, abandoned and in a critical condition. The woman, identified as Yashoda Gaikwad, was reportedly left there by her own grandson. She was found severely weakened and helpless, struggling to survive without any support.
The incident came to light on Saturday morning when patrolling officers from the Mumbai Police found an elderly woman lying in deplorable conditions near a roadside garbage dump. Gaikwad, who is battling skin cancer, was discovered barely conscious and severely weakened.
She was immobile and appeared severely neglected. When we attempted to talk to her, she said her grandson had brought her to the location and abandoned her,” said a police official familiar with the case.
Although she was discovered in the morning, it took almost the entire day to get her admitted to a hospital. Several hospitals allegedly declined to take her in, citing the severity of her condition and the absence of proper identification. She was eventually admitted to Cooper Hospital at approximately 5:30 p.m.”
The delay in providing medical attention to the ailing woman has sparked concern over the treatment of vulnerable elderly individuals, especially those suffering from illness and lacking immediate family support. Despite her frail condition,
Gaikwad was able to give police two addresses—one in Malad and another in Kandivali—which are believed to be connected to her relatives.
Authorities are currently investigating both locations in an effort to trace her family and determine the circumstances surrounding her apparent abandonment.
A case has been filed, and the police have distributed her photograph to various stations in an effort to locate her family members.
“It’s truly heartbreaking to witness an elderly woman, already battling a serious illness, abandoned in such cruel circumstances,” said an officer from Aarey police station. “We are doing everything in our power to find her relatives and take the necessary steps to ensure justice and proper care.”
The case has triggered outrage among locals and social media users, with many calling for stricter action against those who neglect or abandon their elderly family members. Meanwhile, Gaikwad remains under treatment at Cooper Hospital as the investigation continues.
