“In Mumbai’s Vikhroli, a Marwari shopkeeper apologised after posting a ‘Marathi ko Maharashtra mein…’ WhatsApp status, following MNS intervention and public backlash.

Marathi ko Maharashtra mein…’: Vikhroli Shopkeeper Apologises After MNS Action on WhatsApp Status

Mumbai — A Marwari shopkeeper in Vikhroli, Mumbai, was publicly confronted by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists over a provocative WhatsApp status that read: “See the power of a Rajasthani. Beat the Marathi in Maharashtra itself… nobody can stand before us.” In a widely shared video, the shopkeeper is seen kneeling, hands folded, apologising before the Marathi community and the camera.

The uproar began on July 16 when the shopkeeper’s WhatsApp status insulted Marathi identity. MNS workers, alerted to the post, stormed his shop in Tagore Nagar, Vikhroli. They physically assaulted him, paraded him through the market, and forced him to apologise on camera, begging forgiveness from “Marathi manus.” A formal complaint was filed shortly after.

A viral clip shows the visibly shaken shopkeeper, kneeling with folded hands, insisting he won’t repeat the mistake and pleading for forgiveness. MNS division chief Vishwajit Dholam urged locals to boycott his store. Social media erupted, with many questioning whether cultural pride justified mob action.

Local police have registered an FIR and taken statements regarding the incident. Earlier, similar actions included a chargesheet filed against seven MNS workers for thrashing a shop owner in Mira Road on June 29 — a separate but related case tied to a Hindi-Marathi dispute.

These moves follow a spate of incidents over the past month, including the assault of an auto-rickshaw driver in Virar on July 12 by MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT) workers for refusing to speak Marathi.

This episode is part of a growing pattern in the state, where regional identity and linguistic pride have sparked unrest. In 2008, for example, MNS workers targeted North Indian migrants in multiple cities during a language-fueled campaign. In more recent weeks, Mumbai lawyers have petitioned the DGP to act against MNS for these assaults, citing threats to national unity.

State ministers have weighed in, urging respect for Marathi while warning that vigilante justice is unacceptable.

The Vikhroli incident has intensified discussions about language and enforcement in Maharashtra. Critics argue:

  • Proctors of order believe maintaining the sanctity of Marathi is crucial.
  • Opponents say culture must be upheld through education and legal norms, not mob vigilantism.

Lawyers’ calls for invoking the National Security Act reflect fears of escalating para-judicial enforcement

  1. Ongoing investigations: Police are interrogating those involved and may file further charges based on inquiry.
  2. Legal scrutiny: Calls for action under NSA or similar charges may shape judicial response.
  3. Political consequences: MNS may face both support and backlash during upcoming local elections.
  4. Social ramifications: Citizens are increasingly questioning the line between cultural pride and cultural policing.

The Vikhroli episode is emblematic of a broader tension: defending Maharashtra’s Marathi identity versus upholding rule of law and individual liberty. As legal and political processes unfold, Maharashtra faces a challenge: how to promote regional pride without eroding democratic norms or alienating outsiders.
