The Election Commission dismisses Rahul Gandhi’s ‘atom bomb’ remarks, calling them baseless and misleading amid ongoing political tensions. Here’s what the EC said.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday dismissed as “baseless and irresponsible” the claim made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who alleged that his party had uncovered explosive evidence of large-scale manipulation in voter lists. The ECI stated that such remarks were unfounded and that it chooses to ignore them.

We had to investigate thoroughly because the Election Commission offered no assistance,” Gandhi told reporters outside Parliament. “What we’ve uncovered is nothing short of an atom bomb — once it goes off, the very existence of the Election Commission in India will be questioned.

The Leader of Opposition stated that the party launched an investigation after observing irregularities during the elections in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and the Lok Sabha. He alleged that more than 10 million voters were fraudulently added to the electoral rolls.

We had suspicions during the Madhya Pradesh and Lok Sabha elections, but those concerns intensified during the Maharashtra Assembly polls,” Gandhi said. “At the state level, we genuinely believed there was electoral fraud. It took us six months of thorough investigation to study the matter in detail.

Gandhi’s Statement:
“Whoever is responsible for this—from the top to the bottom of the Election Commission—we will hold you accountable. You are acting against the country. This amounts to treason.”

ECI’s Response:
“The Election Commission dismisses these unfounded allegations made on a daily basis. Despite the frequent threats, we urge all election officials to remain committed to their duties and continue working in a fair and transparent manner, undeterred by such irresponsible remarks.”

The Congress party has repeatedly criticized the Election Commission of India (ECI), accusing it of acting as a “biased umpire”—especially in relation to the 2024 general elections and several state assembly polls.

In response to these accusations, the ECI stated that it had sent an email to Rahul Gandhi on June 12 regarding his earlier remarks but received no reply. “He has never communicated with the ECI on any issue in writing,” the commission clarified.

The latest allegations surface as the opposition INDIA bloc intensifies its protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar’s electoral rolls. They allege that the process, backed by the BJP, is a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise a large segment of voters.

On July 6, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused the Election Commission of colluding in the effort, stating, “With the Election Commission’s cooperation, the BJP’s master plan to strip crores of people in Bihar of their voting rights is unfolding. This is a BJP-RSS conspiracy aimed at forcibly disenfranchising the poor, Dalits, and backward communities.”

INDIA Bloc Vows to Intensify Protests; BJP Responds to Rahul Gandhi’s Remarks

Following a joint strategy meeting, the INDIA bloc parties announced on Thursday that they would escalate their protests both inside and outside Parliament. The move comes amid ongoing tensions between the ruling and opposition alliances.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India (ECI) released the draft electoral rolls for Bihar on Friday.

Responding to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent statement, the BJP issued a sharp rebuttal. Party spokesperson Sambit Patra said, “Will Rahul Gandhi explode like a bomb? What do you think? Their only job is to explode—they have no other work.” Patra criticized the Opposition, claiming it lacks faith in democratic institutions and resorts to provocative rhetoric.

We are firm believers in democracy. Even if they drop an atom bomb, we will stand strong to protect the Constitution,
