Mumbai Local Trains Disrupted by Torrential Rains: Latest Updates and Impact

Current Situation: Severe Waterlogging Halts Services

Mumbai continues to reel under relentless rains with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for much of the region today, especially in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Pune. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) remains on high alert, managing water-logging emergency operations and pumping out over 16,451.55 million litres of water between August 16 and 19.

Local train services—Mumbai’s lifeline—have faced widespread disruptions due to severe flooding on tracks. Numerous trains have been cancelled, delayed, or suspended entirely, causing monumental commuter chaos.

A photo captured by AP shows a commuter train stranded amid waist-deep water as passengers abandon hope and disembark umbrellas in hand—capturing the city’s struggle during monsoon season.

Timeline of Service Disruptions

  • The Harbour line (Central Railway) was suspended since Tuesday around 11:15 AM, only to be restored by 3 AM Wednesday.
  • As of 8:30 AM, Western Railway trains are experiencing delays of up to 35 minutes, while Central Railway trails are delayed by around 45 minutes.
  • On the Western line (Churchgate–Dahanu section), trains are running but with delays of 20–25 minutes, and waterlogging remains at spots like Vasai Road, prompting caution and slower movement on the Up Fast line.

🚨 #TravelAlert: Mumbai Local Train Cancellations 🚨

Cancellations & Rescheduling: The Scope of Impact

  • At least 17 local train services were cancelled across routes including Nalla Sopara–Borivali, Borivali–Churchgate, and Virar–Dadar among others.
  • 11 express trains, including one Vande Bharat service, were also cancelled today.
  • Several long-distance trains originating from CSMT have been rescheduled:
    • Mumbai–Chennai Central, now departing at 4:40 PM instead of 12:45 PM.
    • Antodaya Express to Gorakhpur, rescheduled from 1:30 PM to 5:15 PM.
    • Mumbai–Howrah Duronto Express, which will depart at 12:15 AM on August 21 instead of 5:15 PM today.

Wider Ripple Effects: Commuter Hardships & Infrastructure Strain

  • Mumbai’s monorail services resumed after earlier disruptions that stranded numerous passengers; over 700 were rescued amid overcrowding-triggered power failures.
  • Flooding elevated pressure on alternate transport modes. The BMC reported 135 BEST bus routes being diverted due to waterlogging.
  • Parts of the city—especially low-lying areas near the Mithi River—saw evacuations. Around 400 residents from Kurla slums were relocated as water levels approached the river’s danger mark.

Safety Advisories & Performance Moves

  • Despite conditions, Indian Railways maintains that local trains would “won’t stop, won’t pause,” underscoring the critical nature of these services—even amidst chaos.
  • Airlines like IndiGo and SpiceJet have issued advisories warning passengers of potential flight disruptions, urging them to allow extra travel time and check updates regularly.
  • Schools, colleges, and offices in affected regions like Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Lonavala are closed, and several public institutions, including the Bombay High Court, shortened operational hours .
  • The BMC has debunked rumors of a citywide school closure for Wednesday, emphasizing no such official order exists.

Summary

Mumbai’s crucial suburban rail network is heavily disrupted today, Wednesday, August 20, 2025, due to uninterrupted downpours and consequent waterlogging. Even with IMD red alerts in place and train services hampered, authorities are striving to restore connectivity across Central, Western, and Harbour lines. Delays, cancellations, and rescheduling plague both local and long-distance services. Monorail and bus services grapple with overflow demand, while flights and educational institutions face cascading effects. Emergency relief efforts and advisories are active—but the city’s resilience continues to be tested by the monsoon’s might.
