New Delhi — In a major development in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case, Tahawwur Rana, a key accused and former Pakistani-Canadian businessman, is set to arrive in Delhi shortly after being extradited from the United States. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will take custody of Rana upon his arrival for questioning in connection with his alleged role in the 2008 Mumbai attacks that left 166 people dead.
Sources confirm that the aircraft carrying Rana will land at the Palam Technical Area in Delhi, where elaborate security arrangements have been put in place. A bulletproof convoy, comprising vehicles of Delhi Police and paramilitary forces, awaits the accused’s arrival. Personnel from the Border Security Force (BSF) have also been deployed to ensure foolproof security during his transfer to the NIA headquarters.
As part of the extensive security measures, Gate Number 2 of the Jawaharlal Nehru Metro Station near the NIA office has been temporarily closed. Authorities have restricted public movement in and around the CGO Complex area, where the NIA office is located.
The extradition follows years of legal proceedings in the United States, where a U.S. federal court approved India’s request, noting prima facie evidence of Rana’s involvement in the terror plot. Rana has been accused of aiding David Coleman Headley, one of the main conspirators of the Mumbai attacks, by providing logistical support through his immigration business based in Chicago.
India has assured U.S. authorities that Rana will be prosecuted only for his role in the 26/11 case and not for any other charges, following a commitment similar to the legal safeguards offered during the extradition of Abu Salem from Portugal.
Rana’s arrival marks a significant milestone in India’s long-standing efforts to bring all perpetrators of the 26/11 attacks to justice. The NIA is expected to formally arrest him after his landing and produce him before a special court in Delhi for remand proceedings.
Further updates on the interrogation and legal process are awaited.
