Kolkata, April 8, 2025 — A wave of shock and grief has swept through the Bengali film industry following a tragic accident late last night in Kolkata’s Thakurpukur area, involving noted filmmaker Siddhanta Das. Authorities have confirmed that Das was driving under the influence of alcohol when his vehicle fatally struck a pedestrian, causing widespread outrage and sorrow.
According to eyewitnesses and initial police reports, the incident occurred around 11:45 PM near Thakurpukur Bazar. Das, reportedly returning from a private gathering, lost control of his luxury SUV and rammed into a roadside tea stall, instantly killing a 32-year-old local man and injuring two others.
Police arriving at the scene conducted a breathalyzer test, which revealed that Das was heavily intoxicated. He was immediately taken into custody and charged under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder and rash driving under the influence.
The victim has been identified as Subhadeep Roy, a daily wage worker and sole breadwinner for his family. His sudden death has not only devastated his loved ones but also sparked anger among local residents who are now demanding stricter enforcement of drunk driving laws.
Siddhanta Das, known for critically acclaimed films like Shoroter Shohor and Eka Jibon, has been a respected name in the Bengali cinema circuit for over a decade. News of his involvement in this tragic incident has sent ripples through Tollywood, with many industry peers expressing shock and disappointment.
Prominent actor Parambrata Chattopadhyay took to social media, saying, “A moment of reckless behavior has led to an irreparable loss. My heart goes out to the victim’s family. This must be a wake-up call for all of us.”
Das’ legal team has declined to comment at this stage, though sources indicate he may seek bail in the coming days.
