Who Was Suhas Shetty? A Closer Look at the Controversial Coastal Karnataka Figure
Suhas Shetty, aged 42, was a controversial figure deeply entrenched in the coastal politics of Karnataka. Known for his close affiliations with Hindutva groups, particularly the Bajrang Dal, Shetty had long been a familiar name in the region’s law enforcement records. He was listed as a rowdy-sheeter with five criminal cases registered against him—one in Dakshina Kannada and four within Mangaluru city limits.
Shetty garnered national attention in 2022 when he was named as a prime accused in the murder of 23-year-old Mohammed Fazil, a Muslim youth from Mangalapete in Katipalla. Fazil’s brutal killing occurred just two days after the murder of BJP Yuva Morcha member Praveen Nettaru in Sullia. The back-to-back killings triggered a wave of communal tension across the coastal belt, with Fazil’s death widely viewed as a retaliatory act that intensified an already volatile atmosphere.
Shetty’s criminal record and alleged involvement in high-profile communal crimes placed him at the center of regional political and religious unrest, making him a figure both feared and closely monitored by authorities.
Mangaluru: In response to the recent killing of Shetty, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal has enforced prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNS). These restrictions, which ban public gatherings, protests, and the dissemination of inflammatory content, will remain in effect until May 6.
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and various Hindu organizations called for a bandh across the Dakshina Kannada district on Friday. The shutdown saw widespread participation, with major areas like Hampankatta, Surathkal, Ullal, and Puttur largely closed.
Tensions escalated as incidents of stone pelting were reported on both KSRTC and private buses, prompting transport authorities to suspend services to and from suburban locations. Additionally, liquor sales were prohibited in designated sensitive areas following police advisories, as part of measures to maintain law and order.
