Mumbai is expected to experience intense rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, from May 21 to 24 due to a cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea.

Delhi may get a much-needed break from the heat, as the India Meteorological Department has predicted thunderstorms and rainfall for the capital on Wednesday, May 21.

Tuesday saw sweltering heat with temperatures reaching 41.8°C, compounded by high humidity levels that left many people uncomfortable outdoors.

A recent study by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) has identified three emerging climate trends across North India: a surge in extremely warm nights, a rise in relative humidity, and increased heat stress in densely populated, economically vital urban centers such as Delhi—placing the capital in the high to very high heat risk category.

“The meteorological department has also predicted thunderstorms accompanied by rainfall in the capital on Thursday.

Mumbai experienced heavy pre-monsoon showers on Tuesday, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, which caused significant traffic delays across the city.

According to officials cited by PTI, the eastern and western suburbs were hit harder by the rain than the city center, with more intense downpours reported in those areas.

The weather department has forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in parts of Maharashtra from May 21 to 24, due to an expected cyclonic circulation developing over the east-central Arabian Sea near the Karnataka coast.

A low-pressure system is expected to develop over the same area around May 22, with the potential to move northward and strengthen further thereafter.

“Due to the prevailing weather system, rainfall activity across Maharashtra is expected to intensify over the next three days. According to Shubhangi Bhute, a meteorological department official, some areas may experience heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, with speeds reaching 30–40 kmph or possibly higher in isolated regions.

The areas most likely to be affected include South Konkan, Mumbai, and South-Central Maharashtra.

The India Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy rainfall in the northern districts of West Bengal, along with thunderstorms expected in the southern regions, continuing until Friday.

According to the weather agency, an upper-level cyclonic circulation over northern Bangladesh, combined with favorable wind patterns originating from the Bay of Bengal, is causing intensified thunderstorms with gusty winds and heavy rain in several parts of the state.

Mumbai experienced heavy pre-monsoon showers on Tuesday, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, which caused significant traffic delays across the city.

According to the IMD weather bulletin, rainfall is expected in several districts of South Bengal, including Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, Hooghly, West Burdwan, East Burdwan, West Midnapore, Birbhum, and Murshidabad.

Heavy rainfall is forecasted to continue in northern Bengal districts such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri until Friday.Heavy rains lashed the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, resulting in eight fatalities.

Five people have died in Karnataka, including three in Bengaluru. Additionally, three fatalities occurred in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai due to a wall collapse.

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall and strong winds, in effect from May 20 to 22.

Kerala is expected to experience heavy rainfall over the next seven days. On Tuesday, several parts of the state, including Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, and Malappuram, were hit by intense rain. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Kerala within the next four to five days, which is earlier than the usual arrival date of June 1.

If this occurs, it will mark the earliest onset over the Indian mainland since 2009, according to IMD data.
