The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Delhi and eastern NCR on 29 July 2025 due to intense monsoon rains. Expect waterlogging, traffic gridlock, flight advisories, gusty winds, and thunderstorms—everything you need to know and how to stay safe.

IMD Red Alert as Monsoon Storms Hit Delhi on 29 July 2025

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) escalated the weather warning for Delhi and eastern parts of the National Capital Region to red alert on 29 July 2025, citing intense to very intense rainfall expected in the early hours. The warning encompasses areas including Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and Gurugram, with red alerts also covering parts of Haryana.

Severe Impacts: What Delhi Faced on a Rain‑soaked Tuesday

  • Widespread waterlogging and traffic chaos: Key routes such as ITO, Dhaula Kuan, Patel Nagar, Vijay Chowk, Panchkuian Road, and Ring Road were heavily inundated, severely disrupting the morning commute.
  • Rainfall intensity: Between 8:30 AM and 11:30 AM, Delhi’s weather stations recorded:
    • Ridge: 129.4 mm
    • Safdarjung: 63.5 mm (24‑hour total)
    • Palam: ~64.5 mm
    • Pusa: 37.5 mm, among others.

Forecast & Conditions for July 29 – July 31

Tuesday, 29 July

Expect cloudy skies with heavy to very heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and wind gusts peaking at 30–40 km/h. Temperatures will be cooler than normal, maxing around 29 °C–31 °C, with night lows of 23 °C–25 °C. Humidity levels remain high at ~70%.

Wednesday, 30 July and Thursday, 31 July

Continued light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms and cloud cover. Max temperatures rising gradually to 31 °C–33 °C, while night temperatures remain around 24 °C–26 °C. Rain may taper by Thursday, but intermittent showers are still expected.

Rain spells likely to persist till early August across Delhi‑NCR, including Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Gurugram.

Travel Disruptions & Airline Advisories

Multiple airlines including Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet issued travel advisories warning passengers of possible delays at Delhi’s IGI Airport, urging extra caution and time for commute. Despite heavy rains, no major flight cancellations were reported, though operations slowed due to gusty winds and low visibility.

Safety Measures & Precautions Recommended

Authorities and IMD have advised residents and commuters to:

  1. Minimize travel, especially during peak rainfall hours.
  2. Avoid areas with reported waterlogging, including underpasses and low-lying zones.
  3. Steer clear of areas under trees or near open electrical wiring.
  4. Be cautious near electric poles and water bodies—avoid standing near them during thunderstorms.
  5. Stay updated with real-time traffic advisories to adjust routes accordingly—alternate route suggestions were issued by Delhi Traffic Police.

Broader Context: Monsoon Patterns in Delhi

This current storm originates from an active low‑pressure system shifting from northwest Madhya Pradesh toward northeast Rajasthan, combined with a west‑east monsoon trough just south of Delhi and a western disturbance from Jammu & Kashmir—producing sustained rain in the region.

Notably, Delhi-NCR has seen above-normal monsoon rainfall this season, with intermediated spells of high humidity and oppressive heat earlier, making this intense rainfall typical of the active monsoon season.

  • IMD issued red alert for Delhi and eastern NCR on 29 July 2025 due to intense rainfall.
  • City saw severe flooding, traffic jams, and commuter disruption.
  • Advised temperatures are cooler (max 31 °C, min 23–25 °C), but humidity remains high.
  • Rain expected to continue through early August.
  • Urgent advice: Avoid non-essential travel, follow traffic advisories, and take extreme caution around waterlogged areas and electrical hazards.
