In a moment that brought both laughter and disbelief, an elderly woman in a local hospital surprised staff with an unusual and oddly comical request: she asked for a bidi—a traditional Indian cigarette—just moments before being fitted with an oxygen mask.
According to on-duty medical staff, the woman, estimated to be in her late 70s, had been admitted with respiratory issues and was being prepped for oxygen support. As a nurse approached with the oxygen mask, the patient casually pulled out a bidi and asked, “Let me take one last puff before the mask goes on.”
Caught completely off guard, the nurse paused for a moment before quickly confiscating the bidi, citing obvious health risks. “It was both shocking and funny,” the nurse said. “She was so nonchalant about it—like it was the most normal thing to ask for in that moment.”
Hospital staff reportedly had to stifle laughter while also trying to remain professional. “We had to remind her, gently but firmly, that smoking and oxygen therapy don’t mix,” said a doctor. “The irony was too real.”
The incident quickly became the talk of the ward, with even other patients chuckling over the scene. While the woman was clearly spirited, doctors hope the moment serves as a lighthearted but serious reminder of the dangers of smoking, especially for those with existing respiratory conditions.
“She’s recovering well,” the nurse added, “but we’ve made it very clear: no more bidis in bed.”
In the end, the woman’s request, though ill-advised, injected a dose of unexpected humor into a typically serious hospital environment—proving once again that laughter might not cure everything, but it certainly helps.
