BrahMos Missile Production to Commence in Lucknow, Marking Strategic Defence Milestone
Lucknow is set to become a pivotal centre for India’s defence manufacturing sector with the inauguration of the BrahMos missile manufacturing facility on May 11, the Uttar Pradesh government announced. The facility, developed by BrahMos Aerospace with a ₹300 crore investment, has been established on 80 hectares of land allocated free of cost by the state government in December 2021. The project was completed in a record 3.5 years, encompassing both construction and production readiness.
According to Shrihari Pratap Shahi, ACEO of Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), the state government not only facilitated land allocation but also ensured continuous monitoring of the project to expedite its completion. The facility will also produce other defence equipment, positioning Lucknow as a strategic hub for advanced military manufacturing.
The establishment of the BrahMos unit comes amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, underscoring the strategic significance of enhancing India’s missile capabilities. The new facility will not only bolster India’s defence infrastructure but also promote aerospace industry growth in Uttar Pradesh by introducing modern manufacturing technologies.
The project is expected to generate significant employment opportunities, directly hiring approximately 500 engineers and technicians while indirectly creating thousands of jobs for skilled, semi-skilled, and general workers.
BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between India’s DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) and Russia’s NPOM, was established with 50.5% Indian and 49.5% Russian ownership. Named after the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers, the supersonic cruise missile project represents a significant Indo-Russian defence collaboration.
In addition to the BrahMos unit, the government has also allocated 117.35 hectares of land to 12 other companies under the Defence Corridor initiative. Among them, Aeroloy Technologies has already completed the first phase of a ₹320 crore investment, contributing components for India’s space missions, including Chandrayaan, as well as for fighter aircraft.
These initiatives are projected to create over 3,000 jobs and establish Lucknow as a key production hub for missiles, ammunition, drones, and small arms, reinforcing India’s strategic defence capabilities.
