New Delhi: Security was significantly heightened outside Delhi’s Patiala House Court on Thursday as authorities prepare for the anticipated extradition proceedings of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
Rana, a Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman, has been at the center of a high-profile extradition case. The United States Supreme Court recently rejected his appeal against extradition to India, clearing the way for his transfer. Following the decision, the U.S. administration approved his surrender to Indian authorities, a major step forward in India’s long-standing demand for justice.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has already filed an application before the Patiala House Court to recall trial records associated with the case, indicating that preparations are underway for Rana’s prosecution once he is brought to India.
The Delhi Police, in coordination with central security agencies, deployed multiple layers of security around the court premises. Barricades were installed at key entry points, and additional paramilitary forces were stationed in and around the area to ensure law and order.
A senior police official stated, “Security has been tightened as a precautionary measure. We are following all necessary protocols considering the sensitivity of the case and the global attention it commands.”
Tahawwur Rana is accused of facilitating the movements and operations of David Coleman Headley, one of the main conspirators in the 2008 Mumbai attacks that left 166 people dead. Headley, currently serving a prison sentence in the U.S., had identified Rana as a key associate who helped him establish a cover for his reconnaissance missions in India.
With the legal hurdles in the U.S. now cleared, officials say Rana’s extradition could take place within weeks. His arrival in India will mark a significant development in the 26/11 investigation, potentially shedding more light on the planning and international network behind the attacks.
The case is being closely monitored by security and legal experts, as well as victims’ families, who have long awaited closure.
