A tragic shooting in Accomack County, Virginia, has left a community in shock as a 24-year-old Indian woman and her 56-year-old father were fatally shot at a departmental store where they had been working. The incident occurred on Thursday morning, shortly after the store opened for the day. The victims, identified as Pradeep Patel and his daughter Urmi Patel, had been living in the US for the past six years after relocating from Mehsana district in Gujarat, India. They were employed at the convenience store, which was owned by a relative.

According to reports, the accused asked the Patels why the store was shut at night and opened fire

Details of the Incident

The shooter, George Frazier Devon Wharton, 44, is in police custody after being arrested in connection with the double murder. Authorities say that Wharton arrived at the store Shooting early on Thursday morning with the intention of purchasing liquor. It was reported that he inquired about why the store was closed the previous night before turning violent. Without warning, Wharton opened fire on Pradeep and Urmi Patel. Pradeep Patel died instantly at the scene, while his daughter Urmi succumbed to her injuries after being transported to a nearby hospital.

This senseless act of violence has not only devastated the Patel family but also left the local community grappling with the brutality of the crime. Paresh Patel, the store’s Shooting owner and a relative of the victims, spoke to local media about the tragedy, expressing disbelief and sorrow. “My cousin’s wife and her dad were working this morning. Some guy came here and just shot. I don’t know what to do,” Paresh Patel told WAVY TV.

The Patel Family’s Journey to the United States for Shooting

Pradeep Patel, his wife Hansaben, and their daughter Urmi moved to the United States for Shooting about six years ago in search of a better life. They had been working at the convenience store, which was run by Paresh Patel, as part of their efforts to support themselves in a foreign land. The family had two other daughters, one of whom lives in Canada, while the other resides in Ahmedabad, India.

Pradeep’s uncle, Chandu Patel, who still resides in Mehsana, Gujarat, expressed his devastation upon hearing the news. “We knew from local media reports and a viral video that they were shot dead. We spoke to his daughter and she told us everything,” he said. The double murder has sent shockwaves Shooting through the extended Patel family back in India, who are now grieving the loss of two loved ones in such a violent manner.

The Legal Charges Against Wharton

George Frazier Devon Wharton has been charged with first-degree murder, among other serious charges. Authorities have also charged him under felony and arms laws due to the nature of the crime and his possession of firearms during the incident. The charges highlight the severity of the shooting and the legal ramifications that Wharton will face in connection with the tragic deaths of Pradeep and Urmi Patel.

A Growing Concern for Indian Communities in the US

The tragic deaths of Pradeep and Urmi Patel come just months after a similar incident in North Carolina, where 36-year-old Mainank Patel, an Indian-origin man running a convenience store, Shooting was also shot and killed during a robbery. The Indian-American community has long been known for its hardworking nature, with many members working in convenience stores, gas stations, and small businesses to make a living.
