April 15, 2025 — A video that recently surfaced on social media has sparked nationwide outrage, showing a man using the Indian national flag to carry bottles of alcohol and snacks. The footage, which quickly went viral, has drawn widespread condemnation for what many are calling a blatant act of disrespect towards the tricolor and the values it symbolizes.
In the now-viral clip, the man is seen casually draping the national flag over a bundle of liquor bottles and snack packets, walking through what appears to be a public area. Viewers were quick to express their anger and disappointment, with many calling for strict action to be taken against the individual involved.
Social media platforms were flooded with reactions from citizens, activists, and public figures alike. Hashtags such as #RespectTheFlag and #FlagNotForShame began trending as users voiced their dismay. Prominent voices called for legal action under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, which prohibits the desecration of the national flag.
“This is not just an act of ignorance; it is an insult to the very identity of our nation,” said a spokesperson for a national veterans’ organization. “The flag represents the sacrifices of millions, and to use it so carelessly is absolutely unacceptable.”
Legal experts noted that under Indian law, any desecration or insult to the national flag is a punishable offense, which can lead to imprisonment and/or fines. Police officials have reportedly taken note of the video and an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the individual.
“We are treating this matter with utmost seriousness,” said a senior police officer. “The individual will be held accountable as per the law.”
In the meantime, educators and civic leaders are urging for increased awareness and education about the national symbols and the importance of respecting them.
As the country waits for authorities to take further action, the incident has reignited conversations about patriotism, national pride, and the responsibilities that come with freedom of expression in the digital age.
