West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has lashed out at the Supreme Court’s recent order annulling the appointments of thousands of school teachers and non-teaching staff recruited through the 2016 State Level Selection Test (SLST), vowing defiance in characteristic style.
“Not while I’m alive. I will not allow this injustice to happen to our youth,” Banerjee said at a public rally in Kolkata on Sunday, firmly rejecting the top court’s verdict that invalidated over 25,000 appointments due to alleged irregularities and corruption in the recruitment process.
The Supreme Court’s ruling followed a long-drawn investigation into the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) recruitment scam, with reports highlighting favoritism, bribes, and manipulation of merit lists. The court’s order affects teaching and non-teaching staff hired across government-aided schools, leaving thousands of livelihoods hanging in the balance.
Banerjee, however, questioned the basis of the verdict. “If a few officials were involved in wrongdoing, why should so many innocent teachers suffer? This is a cruel decision. The court must think of the human side too,” she said, addressing a visibly charged crowd.Mamata
The Chief Minister also accused opposition parties and the central government of orchestrating a “conspiracy” to destabilize her government and undermine Bengal’s education system. “They want to break the backbone of our schools and demoralize our youth. But we will not bow down,” she thundered.
In response to the verdict, Banerjee hinted at challenging the decision through legal and constitutional means, and also exploring a legislative route to regularize the affected teachers. She assured the teaching community that the state would stand by them.
Meanwhile, the opposition has hit back at Banerjee’s remarks, calling them an attack on the judiciary. BJP leaders criticized her for “defying the rule of law” and accused the Trinamool Congress of shielding corruption under the guise of compassion.Mamata
The ruling has sparked protests across the state, with affected teachers taking to the streets, demanding justice and job security. With emotions running high and political tensions escalating, the state now braces for another round of legal and political drama.Mamata
As the battle between the judiciary and the West Bengal government intensifies, the future of thousands of educators hangs in uncertainty — caught in the crossfire of law, politics, and public sentiment.
