A sudden and intense storm swept through large parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region on Friday, affecting Thane, Kalyan, Mumbra, Dombivli, and areas of Navi Mumbai. The late afternoon storm brought with it powerful winds, thick dust clouds, and a heavy downpour, causing disruption to daily life and traffic.
Residents reported darkening skies and howling winds around 4:00 PM, followed by a rapid drop in temperature. Within minutes, visibility dropped significantly due to large dust clouds kicked up by the strong gusts, especially in more open or under-construction areas. Shortly afterward, heavy rains lashed the region, bringing relief from the summer heat but also resulting in waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Trees were uprooted in several localities, including parts of Thane West and Kalyan East, and there were reports of power outages in some pockets due to snapped electricity lines. Local train services were briefly delayed, especially on the Central Line, as railway authorities exercised caution due to debris on tracks and limited visibility.

Social media was flooded with images and videos of the storm’s impact — flying debris, shaking trees, dark skies, and sudden showers. Commuters caught off guard by the sudden change in weather were seen taking shelter at bus stops, under flyovers, or in nearby shops.Storm
Officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed the storm was the result of a fast-developing convective system triggered by rising daytime temperatures and moisture in the air. “These pre-monsoon thunderstorms are not uncommon for this time of the year, though the intensity and wind speed in today’s storm were above average,” said an IMD spokesperson.
Emergency services were deployed in affected areas to clear fallen trees and ensure roadways were passable. No major injuries or fatalities were reported at the time of publishing, though authorities urged citizens to stay indoors during such sudden weather events and avoid taking shelter under trees or unstable structures.
The storm is expected to pass overnight, with clearer skies forecast for the weekend. However, weather agencies are closely monitoring the region for further pre-monsoon activity.
