A senior official of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has been dismissed after a viral video showed railway staff illegally disposing of garbage from a moving train. The incident, which sparked widespread outrage on social media, has reignited concerns over environmental responsibility and waste management within the Indian Railways.
The video, recorded by a passenger on board, captured railway staff tossing large plastic bags filled with waste directly onto the tracks from a pantry car. The footage quickly gained traction, drawing criticism from environmental activists and concerned citizens, who called for stringent action against those responsible.
Following an internal investigation, IRCTC identified the senior official in charge and took swift action by terminating their employment. The Railway Ministry issued a statement condemning the act, reiterating the organization’s commitment to sustainable practices and waste disposal regulations.
“This kind of negligence towards environmental conservation is unacceptable. We are taking strict action against those responsible to ensure such incidents do not happen again,” an IRCTC spokesperson said.
The Indian Railways has been actively promoting cleanliness and sustainability initiatives, including the installation of bio-toilets and waste segregation systems. However, this incident has raised concerns about the enforcement of such policies at the ground level.
Environmentalists have urged stricter monitoring and penalties to prevent such occurrences in the future. “Dumping garbage from a moving train not only pollutes the environment but also poses risks to local communities and wildlife,” said an activist from a leading environmental organization.
As public pressure mounts, railway authorities have assured that additional measures will be implemented to ensure accountability. Meanwhile, the viral video continues to serve as a stark reminder of the challenges in maintaining cleanliness and sustainability in India’s extensive railway network.
