Indian military leadership confirms preemptive defense measures effectively intercepted threats to the Golden Temple, ensuring its safety amid anticipated retaliation.
On the night of May 7–8, Pakistan attempted to launch a drone and missile attack targeting the Golden Temple in Amritsar, reportedly in retaliation for India’s earlier airstrikes on nine terrorist locations within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This information was disclosed on Monday by Major General Kartik C Seshadri, General Officer Commanding of the Indian Army’s 15th Infantry Division.
“A senior Indian Army official stated that Pakistan lacked any legitimate military objectives and was likely to target civilian populations and religious sites within India.
Given that the Pakistani Army lacks credible military targets, we expected they might attempt strikes on Indian military facilities or civilian areas, including religious sites,” he told ANI. “Among these, the Golden Temple stood out as a particularly high-profile potential target,” he added.
We deployed advanced air defence systems to provide comprehensive protective coverage around the Golden Temple,” stated Major General Seshadri.
“In the early hours of May 8, under the cover of darkness, Pakistan launched a large-scale aerial attack utilizing drones and long-range missiles. According to official statements, the Indian Army was on high alert and successfully detected and neutralized all incoming threats. ‘During the pre-dawn hours of May 8, Pakistan initiated a major air assault using unmanned aerial vehicles and long-range missile systems,’ the spokesperson said, emphasizing that the Indian forces were fully prepared and effectively intercepted every hostile target.”
“We were fully prepared for such an eventuality, having anticipated the threat in advance. Thanks to the courage and vigilance of our army air defence gunners, the malicious attempts by the Pakistan Army were successfully repelled. Every drone and missile aimed at the Golden Temple was intercepted and neutralized, ensuring that not even the slightest damage was inflicted upon our sacred shrine,” the officer said.
They were neutralized by the Integrated Counter-UAS Grid and Air Defence systems,” the statement reported.

The Indian Army conducted a live demonstration showcasing the effectiveness of its air defence systems, including the AKASH missile system and L-70 Air Defence Guns, in successfully intercepting and neutralising Pakistani drones and missiles—thereby safeguarding the Golden Temple and major urban centres across Punjab.
A statement from the defence ministry earlier confirmed that multiple Indian cities and military installations were targeted during the overnight attack, including Amritsar, Jammu, Srinagar, Pathankot, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, and Bhuj. Additionally, explosions were reported across Kashmir.
The attacks followed India’s Operation Sindoor, a coordinated military assault targeting nine terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. This operation was launched in retaliation for the terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians.
