In the early hours of Saturday, April 19, 2025, a four-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Mustafabad area, resulting in the deaths of at least four individuals and injuries to several others. The incident occurred around 3 a.m., prompting immediate rescue operations by the Delhi Fire Service, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local police. As of the latest reports, 14 people have been rescued, while approximately eight individuals are feared to be still trapped under the debris .
Reacting swiftly to the tragedy, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered a magisterial inquiry to investigate the circumstances leading to the collapse. The probe aims to determine any lapses in construction standards, maintenance, or regulatory oversight that may have contributed to the incident. CM Gupta emphasized the importance of accountability and assured that those found negligent would face strict action.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East District) Sandeep Lamba stated that the rescue operations are ongoing, with efforts focused on locating and assisting any remaining survivors. The building, located in a densely populated area, has raised concerns about the structural integrity of similar constructions in the vicinity.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the building was constructed approximately 17-18 years ago and may have had structural vulnerabilities. Authorities have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the building’s owner under sections related to causing death by negligence . CM
The Delhi government has announced compensation for the victims’ families and has initiated a survey to assess the safety of nearby buildings. Residents are urged to report any signs of structural weakness in their homes to prevent future tragedies.
