India alleges that Pakistan deployed 400 drones, potentially sourced from Turkiye, raising concerns over regional security and foreign involvement in drone operations.

spanning from Leh to Sir Creek, deploying an estimated 300 to 400 drones—suspected to be of Turkish origin—in what appeared to be a probe of India’s air defense systems, according to Wing Commander Vyomika Singh. She further noted that an armed drone was later used in an attempt to strike the Bhatinda military station, and accused Pakistan of using civilian airliners as a protective cover for their operations.
In retaliation, the Indian armed forces carried out strikes on four Pakistani air defence positions, successfully destroying a radar installation, Wing Commander Singh reported on Friday, May 9, 2025.
Meanwhile, Pakistan continues to carry out intense shelling along the Line of Control (LoC), resulting in casualties among Indian Army personnel, although specific figures have not been released.
Earlier in the day, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh convened a high-level meeting at South Block with Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh, and Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh to assess the security situation along the western border and evaluate the operational readiness of the armed forces. Subsequently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a follow-up meeting with the Defence Minister, the CDS, and the three Service Chiefs at his residence to further discuss the developments.
“On the night of May 8-9, the Pakistan military committed multiple violations of Indian airspace along the Western Border, targeting Indian military infrastructure,” said Wing Commander Singh during a media briefing on Friday, May 9, 2025. “Drone intrusions were reported at 36 different locations along the International Border and Line of Control, spanning from Leh to Sir Creek, involving an estimated 300 to 400 drones. The Indian armed forces responded swiftly, neutralizing many of these drones using both kinetic and non-kinetic methods.

She noted that the large-scale aerial incursions were likely intended to assess air defense capabilities and collect intelligence. A forensic analysis of the recovered drone wreckage is currently underway. “Initial findings indicate that the drones are likely Turkish-made Asisguard Songar models,” stated Wing Commander Singh.
On the night of Thursday, May 9, 2025, a coordinated launch of over 500 drones took place across 36 locations along the western border, spanning from 8 p.m. to around midnight. The drones, predominantly quadcopters, were deployed in three distinct waves, with the first wave being relatively smaller in scale, followed by significantly larger subsequent waves.
Late in the night, Pakistan launched an armed Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) aimed at the Bhatinda military station, which was detected and neutralized. In retaliation, the Indian Air Force targeted four air defense sites in Pakistan using loitering munitions, according to sources. Wg Cdr Singh confirmed that one of the UAVs successfully destroyed an air defense radar.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri condemned the recent actions by Pakistan, labeling them as “cowardly.” He characterized these “provocative and escalatory” acts as targeting both civilian infrastructure and certain military sites in Indian cities. He further emphasized that the Indian armed forces had responded in a manner that was “proportionate, adequate, and responsible.
What I want to emphasize is that the Pakistani State’s official and outright absurd rejection of these attacks is yet another demonstration of their deceitfulness and the new lows they are sinking to in their efforts to spread disinformation.

The Pakistan Army continued heavy shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) using large-caliber artillery and drones. The affected regions in Jammu & Kashmir included Tangdhar, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar, Rajouri, Akhnoor, and Udhampur. The Indian Army suffered some casualties and injuries,
but retaliated strongly, inflicting significant losses on the Pakistan Army.
Sources indicate that the shelling is being carried out using a mix of small arms, mortars, and heavy artillery, including 105 mm and 155 mm guns. The Indian Army is reportedly responding efficiently, though in a proportionate manner. Regarding army casualties, a source mentioned that there have been a few fatalities due to heavy artillery, but the exact number has not been disclosed.

Wg Cdr Singh expressed concern over Pakistan’s actions, describing it as “irresponsible behaviour” for not closing its civil airspace despite launching an unsuccessful and unprovoked missile and drone attack on May 7 at 2030 hours. She emphasized that Pakistan’s use of civil airliners as shields, aware that their attacks would provoke a quick air defense response from India, jeopardized the safety of unsuspecting civilian flights, including international ones, operating in the vicinity of the India-Pakistan border.
She provided an example of an Airbus 320 flight operated by Flynas Aviation, which took off from Dammam at 1750 hours and arrived in Lahore at 2110 hours amidst a “high Air Defence” alert in the Punjab sector. “The Indian airspace is completely empty of civil air traffic due to the declared closure,” she said, while Col. Sofiya Qureshi, who translated the statement into Hindi, displayed an image from the flightradar24 portal. “The Air Force exercised significant restraint in its response, ensuring the safety of international civil flights,” she added.
Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a meeting with a group of armed forces veterans to discuss a range of issues concerning the current situation. Among those present were former Chiefs from all three branches of the military and other veterans who have served the country extensively, according to informed sources.
