A First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Amroha district, Uttar Pradesh. Investigations are currently underway to trace the source of the threat.

India Pacer Mohammed Shami Receives Death Threat via Email, FIR Lodged in Amroh
In a shocking and deeply concerning development, Indian cricket star Mohammed Shami has become the target of a death threat sent to him via email. The incident has prompted swift action from authorities, with the Cyber Crime Police Station in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district registering a First Information Report (FIR) and launching a formal investigation.
According to official sources, Shami received the threatening email on Sunday. The contents of the message reportedly included direct threats to his life and were laced with abusive and intimidating language. While the exact contents of the email have not been made public, officials confirmed that the message was deemed serious enough to warrant immediate police intervention.
Shami, who hails from Sahaspur village in Amroha district, has been a vital member of India’s national cricket team for over a decade. Given his public stature and the nature of the threat, authorities are treating the situation with the highest degree of seriousness.
Following the receipt of the email, Shami’s family contacted local police, and an FIR was registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Amroha. The FIR has been filed under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology (IT) Act that deal with criminal intimidation, threats, and online harassment.
Amroha Superintendent of Police (SP) Aditya Langeh confirmed the registration of the FIR and assured that a comprehensive investigation is underway. “We have taken cognizance of the complaint and a case has been registered. Our cyber crime team is actively tracing the origin of the email and working with forensic experts to track down the IP address,” said SP Langeh.
He added that security measures around Shami’s family residence in Sahaspur have also been heightened as a precautionary step. “We are ensuring the safety and well-being of the cricketer and his family,” he stated.
Investigators have begun analyzing the email’s metadata, including the sender’s IP address, device information, and routing path. Officials are coordinating with cyber security experts and, if necessary, will request support from national agencies such as the Cyber Crime Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
“We are exploring all technical avenues. Email threats leave behind a digital trail, and we are confident we can track the source,” a senior official from the cyber unit said.
Authorities are also examining whether this threat is an isolated incident or part of a larger campaign of online abuse and intimidation, which has unfortunately become increasingly common in recent years, especially targeting public figures.
Reactions from the Cricketing Community
The news of the death threat has sparked outrage and concern across the Indian cricketing community. Fellow players, former cricketers, and fans have voiced their support for Shami and condemned the act of intimidation.
BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) Secretary Jay Shah issued a brief statement expressing solidarity with Shami. “We are in constant touch with the player and local authorities. The safety and mental well-being of our players are of utmost importance. We trust that the investigation will bring the culprit to justice,” Shah said.
Former cricketer and commentator VVS Laxman called the incident “deeply disturbing” and urged law enforcement to ensure swift action. “No one deserves to be threatened for any reason, let alone someone who has served the country with such distinction,” Laxman tweeted.
This is not the first time Mohammed Shami has faced targeted abuse. In the past, especially during and after major cricket tournaments, the pacer has been subjected to communal slurs and hate messages online. One of the most prominent instances occurred during the 2021 T20 World Cup, where Shami was trolled after India’s loss to Pakistan. At the time, several teammates and public figures came to his defense, highlighting the need for stricter regulations and monitoring of online hate speech.
The latest incident has once again reignited the conversation around the safety of public figures, online hate, and the responsibilities of social media platforms. Legal experts have pointed out that while India has robust IT laws, implementation and enforcement remain challenging due to the vast and anonymous nature of the internet.
Several lawmakers and civil society groups have urged the government to bolster its cyber crime monitoring units and implement more effective mechanisms to protect citizens from digital threats.

A senior official in the Ministry of Home Affairs acknowledged the increasing threat of cyber harassment and said that the ministry was evaluating ways to expand the jurisdiction and capability of cyber crime cells across states. “High-profile cases like this one draw attention, but cyber threats affect thousands every day. We need a comprehensive national strategy,” the official said.
Shami Yet to Issue Statement
As of now, Mohammed Shami has not made any public statement regarding the threat. Sources close to the cricketer say he is shaken but composed, and is focusing on his recovery and fitness ahead of India’s upcoming international fixtures. Shami has been recovering from an injury that kept him out of recent matches, but remains a key part of India’s bowling arsenal.
